An ambitious plan being promoted by tourism groups in the capital could lead to long haul flights out of Wellington by 2009.
The plan is to cash in on airline developments such as the Airbus A350 which could operate from Wellington's existing runway.
Positively Wellington Tourism chief Tim Cossar says they are seeking financial input from local councils as they believe there would be huge benefits to the region.
He says there is the opportunity to fly direct to the UK and Asia.
Tim Cossar says Wellington must act now if it wants to get on board as airlines develop routes for the new aircraft.
