Trade minister backs Qantas merger

Australian Trade Minister Mark Vaile has backed a merger between Qantas and Singapore Airlines to ensure the carrier remains viable in the global market.

He said Qantas was "facing serious commercial challenges and, quite frankly, that's the direction international aviation is moving in".
