An Air New Zealand employee who lost his job after being caught speeding at Auckland Airport has been ordered to pay his former employer $1000 towards costs over the dispute.
Talaifo Lemalu was captured on speed camera in 2007 while driving a delivery van on airport land.
After the camera flashed, he sat in his vehicle for several minutes before covering the camera's lens, the Employment Relations Authority said.
He already had demerit points and the extra points meant his permit to drive at work was cancelled. He was then fired from his job as a storeman for breaching rules about behaviour on airside land.
Mr Lemalu filed a personal grievance against Air NZ but the ERA declined to hear it because it was filed beyond the 90-day deadline after dismissal.
