KEY POINTS:
Pacific Blue is expanding its activities out of Auckland, with the introduction of nine return flights a week to Sydney starting in October.
The move comes a fortnight after the company said it would introduce services between Auckland and Melbourne next month.
When the company announced the Melbourne service, chief executive John Bartlett said international expansion was a logical next step for the airline after its successful launch of domestic services within this country.
Announcing the Sydney flights, the airline said it would take delivery of another 180-seat Boeing 737-800 next month to fly the new route, bringing the number of planes in its fleet to nine.
Auckland Airport chief executive Don Huse said Pacific Blue would be the first low-cost carrier to operate on the Sydney sector, which was the largest single international route on offer from Auckland Airport.
The new services equated to 169,000 extra seats a year.
