Delta unveils 'internetest safety video'

Delta Air Lines has taken a leaf out of Air New Zealand's book in releasing a viral new in-flight safety video the airline has dubbed "the internetest safety video on the internet".

Combining an exhausting 25 internet memes, including double rainbow guy, the Harlem shake and the ice bucket challenge, the video will screen on Delta aircraft from May 25 - an apt homage to YouTube's ten year anniversary.

Delata's video comes a week after Air New Zealand released its 11th offbeat in-flight safety video Surfing Safari.

Delta spokesman Mauricio Parise said in a statement that their mash-up included some of the internet's most-loved memes and personalities which combined have gathered nearly 2 billion views.

"We had a ton of fun with this one, and we think our customers will, too. Internet fame is fleeting, but our commitment to the safety of our customers and crew is not," he said.

"These memes and cameos tap into the zeitgeist as the latest way of capturing our customers' attention for our important safety presentation."

Other memes referenced by the US airline include Roomba cat, evolution of dance and hamsters eating burritos.

Air New Zealand said their Surfing Safari video has already attracted almost four million online views in its first week.

Previous videos include the body painting exposé Nothing to Hide which aired at a time when there was debate over transparency of fares, an All Black themed video, which came out during the build-up to the 2011 Rugby World Cup, The Bear Essentials of Safety with Bear Grylls, and two Hobbit-inspired safety videos featuring various cast members from The Hobbit trilogy.

Collectively, the airline's safety videos have been viewed more than 50 million times, resulting in approaches from Hollywood studios wanting to to work with them to leverage films.
