Could you sit in economy for 18 hours? - Doha to Auckland to be world's longest flight

Qatar Airways is reportedly going to operate "ultra-long haul flights" between Doha and Auckland, making it the longest flight in the world.

The state-owned airline has eyed this market before and Bloomberg Business reports its chief executive Akbar Al Baker as saying ultra-long haul flights to Auckland were part of new expansion plans.

The distance between Doha and Auckland was calculated as 14,500 km and would take 18 and a half hours according to Travelmath's flight time calculator.

Qantas currently boasts the longest non-stop flight in the world, but the Doha - Auckland flight would beat that route by almost 1000 kilometres.

Qantas has operated a Sydney - Dallas flight since September 2014 which covers 13,800 kilometres and takes approximately 17 hours.

The Qatar Airways flight would be using Boeing Co.'s 777-LR aircraft. Bloomberg reported Qatar Qirways would also fly ultra-long haul flights to Santiago, Chile,

The longest flight Air New Zealand operates is from Auckland to Houston using Boeing's 777-ER aircraft. The flight covers a distance of 11,933 kilometres and takes 14 hours and 30 minutes.
