Cathay Pacific, in the first redesign of airline economy class seating for decades, will soon introduce "fixed back" seats in economy class, similar to a mini business class seat, the airline said today.
This will allow economy class passengers to recline without encroaching on the space of those behind, as the seats slide within the fixed shell.
The airline said research showed that the two major irritants for economy class passengers are the recline of the seat in front into the passenger's living space, and the passenger behind pulling the seat back when they move out of their seat.
Cathay Pacific's research also indicated that economy class passengers were increasingly concerned about travel-related health issues on long haul flights, as well as living space and legroom.
For the first time, Cathay Pacific will undertake a revamp which will include its long haul seat, cabin design and inflight entertainment. Leading airline design consultants, Design Q, have been used to come up with new design concepts.
The product will be installed on all the airline's new deliveries and also retro-fitted on Cathay Pacific long-haul aircraft already in operation. The installation programme will run from January 2007 through to mid 2009.
Other new features include the relocation of the magazine pocket from the seat in front to the below the seat – this helps create more leg room.
Personal TV's will be dramatically bigger, changing from the current 6 ½ inch (16.5cm) screen to a 9 inch (22.9 cm) screen. The latest audio/video on demand technology will be employed on the aircraft.
Another new feature of the economy class seats is the new seatbelt for enhanced safety. As well as the traditional lapbelt, the new seat also features a diagonal shoulder belt, offering passengers more protection and comfort.
Overall, the changes to the seat and cabin are designed to encourage the long-haul economy class experience to be enjoyed, rather than endured.
The main driving force behind the upgrade is a desire to improve seat and cabin comfort and provide a better all-round flying experience for passengers in all classes.
Business and first class configurations are also included in the revamp.
