Air New Zealand is set to announce changes to its Airports scheme today.
The Dominion Post reported this morning that the airline is expected to make it easier to redeem points but harder to earn new ones.
The airline has kept details of any changes under wraps, but the newspaper said travel agents believe a likely option is for customers to be able to buy normal fares using their Airpoints rather than having to compete for a limited number of reserved seats on each flight.
The value of the points may also be reduced, meaning more points will be needed to travel to a given destination.
A major Airpoints revamp was last undertaken by the airline in August 2002.
Shares in Air New Zealand last traded yesterday at 41 cents, having traded between 38 cents and 64 cents over the past 12 months.
