Farmers may be some of the world's best in terms of practical and technological skills, but an academic says he is exploring the quality of their managerial skills.
"We can make lots of guesses and assumptions and there's plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest that they're pretty good, but ... no concrete research exists to give us the true picture," said Dr Peter Nuthall, associate professor of farm management at Lincoln University.
