Canterbury dairy representatives believe the Government's action against Canada over international trading rules will help level the playing field for dairy exporters.
The Government is seeking permission from the World Trade Organisation to take punitive action against Canada over what it regards as dumping of subsidised Canadian milk products onto world markets.
Harry Schat, Chairman of North Canterbury Federated Farmers Dairy Section, believes plans to put $35 million worth of tariffs on Canadian exports will not bring any immediate benefits to dairy farmers.
However he says it will create a positive feeling among farmers knowing their livelihoods are being defended against those trying to break international trading rules on the export of dairy produce.
