KEY POINTS:
Investment research company Morningstar has announced the finalists in its annual fund manager of the year awards, including two new awards; KiwiSaver fund manager of the year and emerging fund manager of the year.
Winners are judged on a combination of performance during 2008; risk-adjusted medium- to long-term track record; and qualitative analyst conviction.
The overall winner will be the New Zealand fund manager which maintained the highest level of overall funds management excellence during calendar 2008.
Tyndall Investment Management won the fund manager of the year award last year, beating other finalists AMP Capital investors and ASB Group Investments to the top spot.
Tyndall also took out the international equity category in 2008 while Brook Asset Management topped domestic equities. Tower won the multi-sector manager of the year award, ASB Group Investments took out the fixed interest title and AMP Capital Investors was named property fund manager of the year.
A new KiwiSaver fund manager of the year award recognises the provider which offers the best solution for New Zealanders' retirement savings needs.
Another new award, emerging fund manager of the year, has been introduced to "recognise the emerging fund manager which has the opportunity and ability to build a successful long-term track record through its performance and investment management capabilities".
The finalists are:
Fund Manager of the Year 2008: AMP Capital, Tower, Tyndall Investment Management.
Multi-Sector Fund Manager of the Year 2008: AMP Capital, ING, Tower.
Fixed Interest Fund Manager of the Year 2008: AMP Capital, ASB Group Investments, Tyndall Investment Management.
New Zealand Equities Fund Manager of the Year 2008: AllianceBernstein, AMP Capital, Brook Asset Management.
International Equities Fund Manager of the Year 2008: ING, Tower, Tyndall Investment Management.
KiwiSaver Fund Manager of the Year 2008: AMP Capital, Brook Asset Management, ING.
Emerging Fund Manager of the Year 2008: Milford Asset Management, Mint Asset Management.
The winners will be announced in Auckland on March 2.
