KEY POINTS:
The board of retirement village operator Metlifecare has approved a major development in Takapuna on Auckland's North Shore.
The village will contain 246 "lifestyle" apartments, 15 serviced apartments and a number of resident-only care suites, adjacent to North Shore Hospital.
Construction will commence in October, with 78 apartments expected to be finished by mid-2009, and the rest by 2010.
