SYDNEY - Two top executives say recognising employees' contributions and engaging people at every level of the business is a must for a successful operation.
This week Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority boss Robert Lang and Microsoft director of human resources for Australia and New Zealand Rose Clements shed light on the best ways to encourage and engage employees in the workplace.
Since becoming chief executive of in 2003, Lang has introduced a healthy lifestyle programme, mentoring partnerships, staff achievement awards and a comprehensive training programme across the organisation.
"If you get the learning and growth things right, and you look after people, then they will run the internal processes that deliver the results, and increase the satisfaction of customers and deliver the financial results that you are after," he said at a Committee for Economic Development of Australia function in Sydney.
Despite winning the Hewitt Best Employer Award this year, Lang said his operation still had a long way to go.
The Authority has made a turnaround in recent years. Employee turnover is now at 18 per cent and lost time from injuries has fallen by 75 per cent since 2003.
Microsoft's Clements said it was important to share success stories with employees.
