Australian chief executives are now the third highest paid in the world, according to a report in today's Sydney Morning Herald newspaper.
A survey, published in British business journal Management Today, found Australian salary packages were exceeded only by American and British company bosses, the newspaper said.
The annual pay package of the average Australian CEO, including share options and bonuses, has soared 73 per cent in just over two years to $1.3 million a year.
The survey found British CEOs were paid on average £509,019 ($1.374 million).
CEOs in the US were in front on $US1.434 million ($2.68 million).
The Management Today survey was based on worldwide research conducted by remuneration specialist Towers Perrin.
