Australia will not follow a European plan to convert excess wine into ethanol for use as car fuel, Agricultural Minister Peter McGauran says.
He said converting grapes into ethanol had proved uneconomical in most circumstances even though Australia had about 900 million litres of surplus wine in storage.
An oversupply of grapes also meant fruit was left on the vine this year.
