The eyes of the dairy world will be on Auckland next month, when up to 600 delegates arrive for the world dairy summit.
It will be the first time the International Dairy Federation's annual six-day showcase has been held in New Zealand in nearly 20 years.
Organiser spokesman Ian Steele, of Anchor Products, said that up to 80 per cent of the delegates would be from overseas.
The summit at Auckland's Aotea Centre will be opened by Governor-General Dame Silvia Cartwright.
Key speakers include the chairman of Fonterra, New Zealand's new mega-cooperative, John Roadley, and its chief executive, Craig Norgate, as well as Denis Brosnan, of Europe's Kerry Group, and Australian dairy leaders.
The host of the world dairy summit was rotated, Mr Steele said. It would be held in France next year and in Belgium in 2003.
The summit will be from October 27 to November 1 and will include visits to dairy operations in the North and South Islands.
Meanwhile, the national dairy conference starts in Wellington tomorrow.
In addition to Mr Roadley and Mr Norgate, speakers will include Agriculture Minister Jim Sutton and Chris Moller, head of Fonterra's NZMP subsidiary.
