A Bay of Plenty-based winemaker has won further accolades at a international competition for the second year in a row.
Morton Estate's chardonnay has taken the trophy for Best International Chardonnay over Ten Pounds at the Decanter Wine Awards in London for its second vintage Coniglio. It also won the Regional Trophy for Best NZ Chardonnay.
The judges say that Coniglio's dominance of the competition for two years shows the quality of New Zealand's chardonnay wines. They say the country that is famed for its sauvignon blanc also needs to be taken seriously for its chardonnay.
Coniglio was tasted against two other heavyweight wines, the Jean-Claude Boisset Champ Gain Puligny Montrachet Premier Cru Bourgogne 2004 and the Wolf Blass Gold Label Chardonnay 2005.
