The Alliance Group has promoted chief operating officer Grant Cuff to replace retiring chief executive Owen Poole.
Chairman John Turner said the group had carried out an international search for a replacement for Mr Poole, but ultimately decided to make an internal promotion.
Mr Poole retires in September after 10 years as chief executive.
Mr Cuff, 47, will now head one of the country's largest exporters, a $1 billion farmer-owned co-operative with eight meat plants around the country and more than 5500 staff.
He has worked in the meat industry for 23 years, with the last 14 in executive positions within the Invercargill-based company.
