A world-record price of $22,000 for a perendale ram was notched up at the South Island Perendale Stud ram fair in Gore last week.
Last year's top price of $13,500 was one of the best prices paid for a perendale in the past 15 years.
The record price came early in the sale and went to a Mt Guardian sire, offered by the Anderson-Wilding partnership of Parnassus in North Canterbury.
Successful bidders were prominent Wyndham breeders John and Marjorie Ayers and their son Warren, of the Kamahi Stud, in partnership with Malcolm and Margaret McKelvie, who operate the Kylemore Stud.
Mr Ayers, who is president of the New Zealand Perendale Society, said he was not surprised at having to pay such a royal price for the ram.
The ram was technically perfect for the breed.
