More than a quarter of information and communications technology sector employees got a pay rise five times the size of the national average, a study says.
The survey by recruitment specialist Hudson in Australia and New Zealand covered a number of sectors, including office support and sales, and found 27 per cent of information and communications technology employees got a pay rise of more than 10 per cent last year. Statistics NZ's Labour Cost Index showed a national increase in salaries and wages in the private sector of 2 per cent.
The Hudson survey found 57 per cent of professionals in the sales, marketing and communications industry got a salary increase - a greater proportion than was recorded for other sectors.
The salary expectations of first-choice candidates exceeded the budget of nearly half of hiring managers.
Salary was the biggest factor in retention for more than four out of 10 employees. Senior talent was a scarce resource across most industries, with 65 per cent of organisations finding it difficult to source senior management.
