Christopher Reive is a Specialist Multimedia Sports Journalist for New Zealand’s Herald. Covering the world of sport is his definition of living the dream.
I’m Christopher Reive and I have been a journalist since 2015. During my high school years, it became clear I should pursue a career that required me to write; being able to construct a decent essay, and not being all that good at a whole lot else. The opportunities and excitement journalism presented made it the clear path for me to follow. I got my start in the game in 2011 volunteering with entertainment magazine Rip It Up while I was in my first year of completing a BA at the University of Waikato, and went on to complete a post-graduate diploma in journalism at Wintec. My first full-time journalism job was as a general reporter with my hometown paper, the Taranaki Daily News, in 2015. I quickly jumped at an opportunity to move to the sports desk in early 2016, before joining the Herald sport team in Auckland in 2017. An avid fan of most sports, I have never wanted to pigeonhole myself as a sport-specific writer, and I have been fortunate to cover a wide range of codes since joining the Herald. For me, the opportunity to tell the stories of our country’s top athletes and teams will always be a privilege. I’ve covered some of the country’s biggest sporting moments in the past five years, from being cage-side to report on UFC championship victories to the Olympics Games; the America’s Cup to international rugby and league fixtures. Covering the world of sport, for me, is the definition of living the dream and getting to know the personalities behind the performances is a special, special thing.
