What to do with food spoiled by power outage

Auckland Council are monitoring kerbside rubbish collections for all areas affected by the power outage.

The Council advises that normal collection days will continue to apply.

Any spoiled food waste should be wrapped in newspaper, or securely tied in a plastic bag, and placed in the bin as usual.

Storing the bin outside will help with any odour issues

For excess waste there are three options:

1. If it is your scheduled Council collection day, you can place waste in your bin. Prioritise any spoiled food waste items first and place into your bin. If your bin is full, any excess foodwaste should be wrapped in paper, placed in a plastic bag and securely tied. Place the bag next to the bin on the kerbside and will be removed as part of the normal Council rubbish collection.

2. If you have freezer space, clearly mark the spoiled food and keep in your freezer, then place into your bin on your regular Council rubbish collection day.

3. If your collection day is next week and if you have room in your wheelie bin, ideally wrap the food and place the contents in the bin. Please note, the food will not pose a health hazard until collected.
