After studying photography at Massey University in Wellington, Steven worked as photographer's assistant on the sets of Lord of the Rings and King Kong. Between the films he assisted Anne Geddes in Australia, Las Vegas and Morocco. Steven moved to Napier and worked as a photographer for regional daily Hawke's Bay Today, where he won best single sports picture by a junior at the Qantas Media Awards 2007. After two years he moved to Auckland and joined the team at The Aucklander and was soon awarded Young Photographer of the year at the NZ Community Newspaper Awards 2007. He backed this up with Best Photographer in the 20,000+ newspaper category in 2008.
