Thsi time next year, their play area will be gone. Joanna Davies checks on a little kindergarten with a worrying deadline.
The end of term is here for children at Hobsonville North Kindergarten and although the kids are excited about the Christmas holidays, their parents are still wondering whether the little kindy will be thrown a lifeline.
For the past year, the parents and the Auckland Kindergarten Association have been trying to find a new home for the kindy, which is on former Air Force land sold to the Hobsonville Land Company. Next December it will close to make way for a new road to the new Hobsonville Point suburb.
Sarah and Tony Collins are parents trying to find a solution. They contacted The Aucklander in September with their concerns.
Tony Collins says progress has been slow. "In three or four months, the families will have to make some decisions about where to send their children.
"The Hobsonville Land Company and the kindergarten association have had more meetings, and the company has suggested some land they could buy, but that's not an option."
The next possibility is to work with the Air Force. "The association is going to write to the Air Force in the New Year to ask if they can help."
In September, the commanding officer of the Air Force's Auckland base at nearby Whenuapai, Richard Marshall, told The Aucklander he was keeping a close eye on the situation.
Auckland Kindergarten Association assistant general manager Peter Pablecheque says the association is still looking at its options. "We are still in discussions with the Hobsonville Land Company and the parents."
