When shoppers step out in Newmarket they could be walking all over the blues, or do they want a lighter shade of paving? Alice Hudson reports.
Should Newmarket's long awaited new footpaths be bluestone or ``manila folder'' coloured granite? Broadway's streetscape upgrade - which includes footpaths, street furniture, lighting and planting - is set to begin in the first half of 2007. The Auckland City Council project is expected to take a year to complete with work done at night so there is minimal disruption. The $6 million project was fast-tracked three years after campaigning led by the Newmarket Business Association, says manager Cameron Brewer. He's encouraging people to check out sample pavers on display at the old BNZ building, next to the Carlton Hotel on Broadway, before next Friday and to fill in feedback forms with their preference. There is a choice between Timaru bluestone, like that on High St, and ``manila folder'' coloured imported granite. He reckons that while the light colour ``could look really smart'', the business association is concerned it could mark easily. While bluestone is more expensive, both can be accommodated within the $6 million budget, he says. The current state of Broadway's 25-year-old footpaths doesn't fit in with Newmarket's high end shopping image. ``Some pavers have been around since the old borough council days. Our infrastructure is struggling to keep up with the quality of retailing we are known for,'' says Mr Brewer. The streetscape upgrade will cover the length of Broadway, from Balm St and Mortimer Pass to the roundabout at the Olympic Pool. Have your say until December 15.
