Grafton cycleway ready to roll

The NZ Transport Agency's Grafton Gully cycleway, a 1.9km extension of the North-western Cycleway is due to open tomorrow.

Prime Minister John Key will open the $14 million project tomorrow morning.

Opening at the same time will be the Beach Road walkway and cycleway project. a 1.5km dedicated cycleway along Beach Road and Mahuhu Crescent (near Vector Arena).

The Westhaven Marina promenade cycle route is expected to open later this year.

These will be linked by cycle routes on Tamaki Drive and Quay Street.

"Once these projects are complete, there will be a continuous, safe and convenient route for cyclists to access the city centre," says Councillor Mike Lee, chair of the Infrastructure Committee.

"This project sets a new standard for cycling initiatives in Auckland and promotes cycling as a safe and convenient mode of transport."

The second stage, which will start construction in January, will link Mahuhu Crescent to Britomart Place.
