Auckland councillors are being kept in the dark about the cost blowout of a review into Mayor Len Brown's affair with Bevan Chuang, which councillor John Watson says amounts to nearly $13,000 a page.
Mr Watson, regarded as a pro-Len Brown councillor, cannot understand the justification for paying EY (Ernst & Young) $230,000 for an 18-page report into any misuse of council resources by Mr Brown during his two-year affair.
He said the work largely involved trawling through emails, phone records and other material, a few interviews with no complex legal issues or forensic analysis.
"For the most part, this work was straightforward and largely clerical in nature and ... could have been completed relatively expeditiously," Mr Watson said.
