Transport Minister Simon Bridges has announced a raft of cycleways projects that will give Auckland city a massive boost towards its quest to become the world's most liveable city.
Through the Urban Cycleways Programme, Mr Bridges has announced $89 million of funding to accelerate the construction of projects in central Auckland, eastern and western connections to the city centre, and links to public transport hubs.
"These projects are among 41 nationwide, which will make cycling a safer and more attractive transport choice," Mr Bridges says.
"The Government's $100 million Urban Cycleways Fund is designed to pull together a range of funding sources, and will result in a total investment in urban cycleways of $333 million over the four-year programme.
"The city centre network will receive $6.33 million from the Urban Cycleways Fund, along with $7 million from the National Land Transport Fund and $7 million from local government.
"Eastern connections to the city centre will receive $39.03 million, evenly split between the Urban Cycleways Fund, the National Land Transport Fund and local government.
"Western connections to the city centre will receive $2.23 million from the Urban Cycleways Fund, along with $4.57 million from the National Land Transport Fund and $4.57 million from local government.
"Links to public transport hubs in New Lynn and Glen Innes will receive $3.18 million from the Urban Cycleways Fund, $7.41 million from the National Land Transport Fund and $7.41 million from local government.
"The Urban Cycleways Programme demonstrates how central and local government can work together, delivering high-quality infrastructure which will encourage more people to ride to work, school, and everywhere in between," Mr Bridges says.
