Question: Is it common for cats to get blackheads? Years ago I had a white cat who got them occasionally, mostly in warmer weather. Now, my tortoiseshell cat has a persistent couple on her chin. What's the best way to deal with them?
Answer: Cats do suffer from a condition called feline acne. This presents itself in several ways ranging from a black, crusty deposit on the chin to distinct pustules and, often, a large amount of swelling and pain. It is caused partly by bacterial infection, but is believed also to have an immune mediated component. The condition responds to antibacterial treatment and steroids. Sometimes, the cat must be anaesthetised and the pus-filled areas opened to achieve drainage. See your vet if your cat appears to have sores on its chin.
