"I'm looking forward to the competition and playing against the harder players. I will just do the best that I can."
While it is his first trip to Melbourne Park, the Rotorua Intermediate student has plenty of potential to return there in the future for bigger tournaments.
He has shown his talent this year by winning the AIMS Games in Tauranga plus a national age-group competition in Wellington at Labour Weekend.
Nick said he had been competing in tournaments since he was 7, working on his game with his dad and coach Guy Beamish. His strength was his forehand, specifically his down-the-line shot. However, he had been working hard on his backhand.
"I used to just be defensive [with my backhand] but now I have improved it and can hit winners ... but not as much as my forehand."
Nick said he would often spend his time at the Rotorua Tennis Club, training with older brother Ryan, 16.
"I train for one hour in the morning before school and I usually try to go down for two hours after school."
He is yet to beat his older brother, who plays for the Rotorua men's premier team in the Waikato Bays interclub competition.
Nick said he did not get sick of all the training although he would sometimes have fights with his brother.
His next goal was to win a national title in the 12-and-under category during the nationals in January. After that, he hopes to work his way into the 14-and-under New Zealand team.
"I want to get into the 14-and-under team because we get to go to the world champs."
Nick is sponsored by Prince and receives rackets, hats and shorts each year. He said his favourite player was Roger Federer, "because of his one-handed backhand".
Others in the 12-and-under side heading to Melbourne on December 10 are Reece Falck (Canterbury) and Michael Geologo (Southern).
