Former Wallabies centre Steve Kefu has created a little bit of Bay of Plenty history by announcing he'd signed with the union ... via Twitter.
It's a big coup for the Steamers as the 31-year-old has bags of experience playing in Australia, France and England - and it was obviously too big a deal for Kefu to keep under his hat.
"Signed for the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand for next season," he tweeted. "Will miss London & all the great people I've met over here. #2weeksleft."
Keen-eyed BOP Mafia personnel - who run the unofficial Steamers support club - spotted Kefu's tweet early Monday and even Steamers coach Sean Horan was able to see the funny side when he heard how the story had been broken.
It is not surprising Horan's humour was intact, with Kefu a much-needed recruit after the retirement of Grant McQuoid and the departure of Cory Aporo (North Harbour) and Brett Mather (Japan).
"We were looking for a really experienced guy to have a working holiday here for 10 weeks and he fit the bill, as he's on his way back to Aussie," Horan said. "He's got a really experienced head on his shoulders and is in pretty good nick."
Kefu is just finishing a two-year stint with Wasps in England, having also played three seasons with French club Castres.
He played six tests for Australia between 2001 and 2003, amid eight seasons with the Queensland Reds in the Super 12, and is the brother of 60-cap Wallabies flanker Toutai Kefu, who was a 1999 World Cup winner for Australia.
Kefu has played Super rugby, French Top 14, English Premiership and Heineken Cup, as well as his international appearances, and the Steamers believe they have secured a major acquisition ahead of July's abridged ITM Cup season.
"We've been working on this ever since we lost Brett Mather. We've got a 10-game campaign in six weeks so he may only play half of those games but what he's going to give us is a huge knowledge base and that experience," Horan said.
"A few of the boys that know he's coming are already really keen to learn off him."
Other midfield options for the Bay include Dan Waenaga, Afai Esera, Ben Smith, Phil Burleigh and Jason Hona, and Mather's loss was tempered by the time he gave the union to find a replacement.
"He had an out-clause in his contract and we were working in pretty closely with him. He had to buy his way out of the contract but it was a mutual agreement because it was what he wanted to do and it would've been a different story if it was a lot closer to the season."
Kefu is one of five brothers, four of whom are rugby players. Younger sibling Mafileo is playing in France for Toulon and their father played six times for Tonga and was part of the team which achieved a historic win over Australia in 1973.
