It was also a disappointing night for Rotorua's biggest hope Scott Henson, who had virtually guaranteed his place in the final. He couldn't make the start line thanks to injury and vehicle damage.
More than 12,000 diehard fans attended the two-day event, with up to 8000 attending finals night to watch Palmerston North driver Andy McCabe (68 points) taking out the three-heat final at SG Equipment Paradise Valley Raceway on Saturday.
Following four points behind McCabe was Rotorua's David Elsworth (64) and Palmerston North's Peter Bengston (63).
Heading into the third and final heat, McCabe led the field on 44 points, followed closely behind him by Bengston, Simon Joblin, Graeme Barr and Shane Harwood all on 42 points.
McCabe held off a strong challenge from Elsworth who won the final race followed closely behind by Joe Faram in third.
In The Daily Post sponsored Bay of Plenty Saloons Championships, Brent McClymont was too strong for the 10-strong field.
McClymont (58 points) won the first two heats easily and showed his courage and skill in the last heat to come from the back of the grid to finish third. Chris Taylor (54) finished second followed by Paul Gressy on 52.
