Scott Mayhew reckons he should have stayed at home.
It wasn't that the Whakarewarewa winger was turning in a shocker for his club side at Puarenga Park against Rangataua, it's just he didn't feel like he was contributing.
"I told Clayton [McMillan] to drag me off and put someone else out
there who could do something," said Mayhew, who had been laid low by the winter "bott".
"I struggled to get out of bed this morning," said the Rotorua Boys' High School PE teacher and hostel master, who has been making his opponents feels poorly this season.
The 2008 Bay of Plenty Sevens and former North Otago and New Zealand Divisional representative is the top try-scorer for Whakarewarewa, with 16, up to Saturday's round three Baywide game, which his side won 20-9.
He probably wouldn't have been playing at all this season if it hadn't been for McMillan getting in his and his wife's ears during the off-season.
"I'd actually decided to retire after the Sevens in Queenstown but Clayts talked me into one more round," he said. Mayhew put his finishing effectiveness down to the free style of rugby Whakarewarewa play.
Despite the 30-year-old's tough self-critique, he did have a busy 40 minutes with Whakarewarewa playing into the wind and Mayhew forced to stay deep in a second fullback role.
While he felt poorly and lifeless, the game was also low quality with referee Stuart Booten showing four yellow cards.
Rangataua led 9-5 at half-time, with Glen Strang knocking over three penalties, including two 55m-plus efforts. Whakarewarewa's response was the first of Kelly Haimona's two tries and they added another to midfielder Wayne Hughson. Haimona converted one and also knocked over a 50m penalty.
Winger Hayden Baird also crossed the line but it was ruled out on a touch judge's report, with Whakarewarewa prop Matt Holt sent to the bin after getting into a scuffle with Johnny Taite, who took matters into his own hands after a stiomping incident. Also in the sin bin during the prickly game were Whakarewarewa's other starting prop Greg Gillies and Rangataua lock Paora Gardiner.
