Rotorua Boys' High School has made a successful start to their campaign to win the Sanix World Rugby Youth Invitational Tournament in Japan.
A 25-7 win against Japan's Tochigi High School wasn't straight forward in wet and cold conditions against a Japanese forward pack that was well drilled in the set pieces.
Talented midfield back Hayze Perham opened the scoring following a well-placed kick from fullback Reuben Te Kani-Taylor. Winger Tarzan Smith dotted down in the corner from a ball that was accurately distributed through the backline from broken play to make the score 10-7 at half time.
Early in the second half, Kaleb Trask, who was tireless on defence all afternoon, managed to rip the ball from the opposition, then broke several tackles to offload out wide to Perham who crossed for his second try.
The game ended with two further tries constructed from back play finished by fullback Reuben Te Kani-Taylor and openside flanker Jake Quin.
