New to the Waiariki Academy of Sport in 2012 is Iori Morley, the academy's first archer. Starting today and running through until April 21 at Rotorua's Smallbone Park is the Trans Tasman Challenge Tournament, where New Zealand will be looking to win back the trophy.
The event run for junior archers is being organised by the Rotorua Archery Club, with Rotorua well represented in the thirteen-strong New Zealand team. Morley and Elizabeth Randle will contest the Cadet Women Compound and Marcus Barclay the Cadet Men Compound.
Archery New Zealand is a target archery association, meaning they shoot at targets on a ground, which is the Olympic discipline.
Archery New Zealand is affiliated to the international governing body, called World Archery. There are other types of archery disciplines, such as field, where archers move around a course and shoot a limited number of arrows from various distances at different sized targets.
Archery New Zealand holds two national tournaments a year - the National Outdoor Championships and the National Indoor Championships. Both events are open to archers of all ages and abilities. There are also many events at regional and club level where archers can compete in a friendly environment. The archery clubs themselves hold regular tournaments and fun shoots for members and visitors from other clubs.
