We would like to pass on our thanks to Graeme Simpson and his partner, Carolyn, for everything they have both done for the sport of mountainbiking.
They have worked so tirelessly over the years we have had some involvement in the sport, for the benefit of all.
Unsung heroes and absolutely awesome ambassadors for Rotorua and mountainbiking.
Together their positive attitude has been a motivation and their quest to take mountainbiking quietly up into the next level is to be congratulated. Enjoy your "Gap Year", your big OE. We will miss reading your weekly updates.

Regarding Johann Hari of the Independent's recent column labelling the upcoming royal wedding an embarrassing frenzy - I am not at all embarrassed by the frenzy. I love it.
I can't wait to see "the dress", I can't wait to see what everybody else is wearing, I can't wait for the pomp, the horses, the cavalry, the personalities. Bring it on.
I am tired of recessions, politics, earthquakes, dour happenings and oh yes, the Rugby World Cup. Now we have an opportunity to enjoy someone else's happiness for a change. Don't knock it. What harm has royalty ever done to you? Chill, as the kids say.

Regarding your recent article about work/life balance - I love that Cathy [who works at Scion] takes her dog to work!
That is really helpful. I think more than taking time off, it's important to go a little deeper and put yourself in a surrounding where you nurture your soul like in a self-renewal retreat.
I have been to some with Renee Trudeau and they have had a huge impact on my daily life. I know she has them regularly and I recommend them. Her next one is in Kripalu (reneetrudeau.com).
In my profession, I am required [to take] yearly "continuing education" hours and they add value to my work/life balance. I wish more companies and employers were like Cathy's.

It's good to see that Rotorua has won the mountainbiking cycle centre [as part of a successful joint bid to establish the national cycling centre of excellence in the Waikato/Bay of Plenty].
That should bring lots of people into our lovely city and, of course, with this will come their money, so it should be good for Rotorua's economy.
I'm a bit sad that the headline didn't have "re" in front of the "cycling centre" but I suppose those people in the ivory tower wouldn't be a bit worried about a silly little thing like recycling now the money is going to pour in.
The people of Rotorua are less impressed with the latest council decision to pull the rubbish bins out of some of our parks.
Still, we'll have to hope none of those mountainbikers go too far from the beaten tracks.

Broadband speed shown on your computer is not internet speed. It is just the speed of the wire at your house to your telco.
Your telco buys internet space on a cable that goes to the USA, and this space determines how fast your internet really is.
The telcos don't want to spend their profits on giving us more speed, so they just hire the bare minimum of cable space: leaving us with a measly 500K speed from the internet. So the broadband initiative won't make any difference really, because the problem is on the other side of the telcos.

In reply to Mr Guerin, Rotorua District Council chief executive (The Daily Post, April 20), I ride a mobility scooter and have time to look in my travels at the state of the roads, footpaths and reserves that I pass daily.
If Mr Guerin was to look at my address in the council customer centre he would see I have approached the service centre numerous times with the same result.
It can take weeks and many follow-up calls to have even the simplest job achieved.
As for making a submission to the draft plan, what a waste of time. Having had recent dealings with the council regarding what I considered a waste of good taxpayers' money, I feel that once the council get on a big tilt at a windmill of their minds, anything the little ratepayer suggests is cold meat.(Abridged)
