"Waimana have a pretty strong forward pack and some big ball carriers, but we stuck to our guns and the defence was a lot better," James said.
He said first five Terina Mohi had another good game.
"She seems to be really producing the good at the moment. Our players of the day were Caitlin Hamilton and Renee Fletcher. They stood out as well.
"Caitlin was in at fullback - she took the ball well and her support play was good. She scored a nice try by supporting our halfback when she made a break. Renee did outstanding work at lock and she scored a 60m try, it was good to watch," he said.
Meanwhile, Rotoiti picked up their first win of the season, beating competition newcomers Matata 37-5.
Coach Victoria Grant, who also laced up the boots and played herself on Sunday, said it was a competitive game played in high spirits.
"It's really exciting to get the first win, the girls played well. It was good because we have a few girls from Matata in our team so it was kind of a home game for them.
"We played to structure well. For once we had a bit more time on attack, instead of defending the whole game, so it was nice to have the chance to put into practice what we've been doing at training," Grant said.
The standout players for Rotoiti were lock Cheryl Irving and hooker Ellen Emery, both playing their first year of rugby and picking it up quickly.
Grant was impressed by Matata and said it was great for women's rugby in the region to have another team in the competition.
"They've got a good team over there, they're doing really good things and I thought they played well. It was just a passionate game of grassroots rugby, which is what everyone loves.
"It is good, a lot of Matata's girls are new to rugby, so they're not coming from other clubs when a new team starts. A lot of these girls are new to the game and it's really exciting."
