A woman died after she was knocked off her mobility scooter in Whakatane on Saturday.

The 93-year-old was knocked off her scooter while riding on a footpath at the same time a vehicle was exiting a driveway of a Tuhoe Avenue property at around 12.30pm.

She was taken to Whakatane Hospital where she later died from the injuries sustained in the crash.

Police have extended their sympathies to the deceased's family.

The name of the deceased will be released once next-of-kin have been advised.

The Bay of Plenty serious crash unit is currently investigating and have asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Whakatane Police station on (07) 308 5255.

This serves as a reminder for all drivers that when exiting driveways to ensure the path is clear before reversing.
