A pupil at Rotorua's Westbrook School has been approached by a man in a vehicle on her way to school.

She was walking on Malfroy Rd when she was offered a ride to school this morning.

In an email to parents today, Westbrook principal Colin Watkins said the child refused, the driver abused her verbally and followed her a short way, before driving off down Pandora Ave.

"The vehicle is described as a grey truck or four wheel drive, with a black pipe sticking up at the front.

"The driver is a dark person, possibly in his 20s", Watkins' email said.

Watkins said police had interviewed the child and he had notified all other Rotorua schools.

"I spoke to the children at assembly, and reminded them of the strategies they should use if approached in this manner."

A police media spokeswoman said police received reports of the suspicious approach at 8.39am.

"Inquiries into the approach are ongoing."

Rotorua police could not be reached for further information.

Any information can be given to Rotorua police on (07) 348 0099 or the anonymous Crimestoppers line on (0800 555 111).

A guide for parents and caregivers
• On their way home from school, children may be approached by people who are seeking directions, wanting help or offering a ride.
• Make sure your child understands that they shouldn't accept rides from anyone unless it has been prearranged with you.
• Children should keep a safe distance from vehicles or people they may meet when walking alone or with friends.
• Encourage them to tell you about anything unusual that happens on the way home.
• If possible, get them to record registration numbers, colour and make/model of any suspicious vehicles. This should be done carefully so that the driver doesn't notice.
