Rotorua residents needn't cancel their holiday plans if MetService issues a weather warning.
Weather spokesman Bob McDavitt says just because a severe weather warning is issued, doesn't mean it will definitely happen.
When MetService issued a weather warning, he said, there was really only a 1 per cent chance it would hit. "You can't pin it down any closer." Weather warnings were simply a way of telling people to be alert, he said.
"It's a difficult concept to get across to people."
When it came to protection against rough weather it was as simple as "if you hear thunder, seek shelter".
Mr McDavitt said thunderstorms rarely hit Rotorua.
While some recent thunderstorm predictions had failed to hit Rotorua, Mr McDavitt said Metservice had recently installed a new radar in the city which would make predictions easier.
Weather warning could mean just 1 pc chance of happening
