Rotorua locals can expect rain and a drop in temperature this week.

MetService said a few showers will develop this afternoon before turning into rain with heavy falls tomorrow.

An overnight low of 4C will see a chilly change as a big low develops in the Tasman Sea moving north dragging up a lot of cold air from the Antarctic.

Wednesday sees a few morning showers turning to fine spells, while showers and cloudy periods are on the cards for Thursday and Friday.

Temperature highs of 13C for Wednesday, 14C Thursday, and 16C for Friday are expected.

The weekend will see more showers for the region.

Meanwhile the Central North Island will see the freezing level drop to 700m tomorrow, with potential snowfall on the Desert Rd.

In addition to our current Heavy Snow Warning for Tuesday, and the Watch for rain and snow, here's the Severe Weather Outlook. Pretty much all of #NZ will see something from this weather system! Full details on severe weather: https://t.co/qHyE5zhh6X ^CF pic.twitter.com/AKmRMX5B23
