A heavy rain warning is in place for Rotorua and Bay of Plenty today.
MetService issued the warning at 8.18am and said areas west of Whakatane, including Rotorua, could get 120-150mm of rain today and into tomorrow with rainfall intensities of 10 to 20mm/hr, possibly up to 25mm/hr in the evening.
The warning is valid until 9am Sunday.
A front is moving southwards over the upper North Island today, preceded by heavy rain and easterly gales. The heaviest falls are expected about Northland, Auckland, Coromandel Peninsula and western Bay of Plenty.
MetService warned heavy rain may cause streams and rivers to rise rapidly. Surface
flooding and slips are also possible and driving conditions may be hazardous.
