Water safety workshop for migrants

A workshop in Rotorua next weekend aims to help new migrants be safe while having fun in the water.

For nearly two years the Citizens Advice Bureau Rotorua has been providing a face-to face information service for new migrants under a contract with the Ministry
of Immigration.

The service is to give migrants information to help make settling into the New Zealand way of life easier and as stress free as possible. As part of the contract the Bureau is required to run free workshops on various topics.

The next workshop is to be held on Saturday, February 23 between 10.30am and 12noon at the Rotorua Aquatic Centre.

The workshop will cover how to be safe while having fun in the water.

"This workshop is extremely topical at the moment - the summer heat certainly makes
visiting the pool, beach or lake an attractive activity - but we also hear the tragic stories of people drowning because they are not confident around water," said Jane Eynon- Richards, manager of the Bureau.

The seminar is free for new migrants who have been in New Zealand two years or less. Register with the bureau by Wednesday.
