Looking for a date night that doesn't blow the budget? Turns out Rotorua is the place to be.

The city has been named New Zealand's cheapest for a date, equal with Palmerston North, at $119.

Dating website EliteSingles looked into the cost of a "typical" date in cities worldwide, including 10 in New Zealand.

The typical date consisted of a mid-range dinner for two, a shared bottle of wine, two cinema tickets, and an 8km taxi ride home.

Queenstown - at $158 - was the most expensive place to go on a date and Auckland was second. The New Zealand average was $132.

Looking globally, the average cost for a date was $118. The most expensive date night worldwide was in Oslo, Norway, at $186.
