One person has died in a crash just south of Turangi.
Emergency services are at the scene of the State Highway 1 crash involving two cars.
It happened just after 1pm.
According to a police media statement, the two cars collided when one attempted to turn right from the highway into a driveway.
The vehicle attempting the right-hand turn was travelling north and a female passenger in that vehicle died at the scene.
The male driver of that vehicle has been taken to Taupo Hospital.
A female passenger in the second vehicle travelling south has also been taken to Taupo Hospital.
The male driver of that vehicle was not injured.
At this stage it is not believed that the injuries suffered by the two people transported to hospital are serious.
The road is closed and diversions are in place via State Highway 41, State Highway 47, and State Highway 46.
A serious crash investigation is underway and police are working to re-open the road as soon as possible.
Motorists are advised to avoid the are.

A northern police communications spokesman said that crash involved two cars on State Highway 1, just south of the township.
One person, with serious injuries, is trapped with fire service working to extract them from the car.
Diversions are in place at Atirau Rd/Taupahi Rd, Turangi and SH46 Rangipo.
A rescue helicopter has been dispatched to the scene.
Other people are also hurt but police said they have suffered non-serious injuries.
