Power is to be restored to homes across Rotorua by 6pm after wild wind wreaked havoc yesterday.
All customers in the Rotorua regions who were without power should have power restored by 6pm tonight, following severe winds that battered the region last night.
At its peak, about 1400 customers were without power across Rotorua, consisting of large pockets in the Rotoma, Okere and Tumunui areas.
All in Rotoma were now connected, with the remaining in Tumunui expected to have power restored by 6pm.
Unison Networks' Relationship & Customer Care Manager Danny Gough said the majority of outages had been caused by trees and debris on power lines, with some causing prolonged periods without power as crews had difficulty accessing some areas.
"For the final 18 customers in Tumunui, a helicopter was required to access the area and, after assessing the damage, we had to replace a pole. The final work is just being completed now so we can get power back on," he said.
"For about 40 customers in Rotoma, similarly it took until about 5pm before we could carry out the necessary repairs to the network. Thankfully, all affected customers are connected again now."
The company was amongst others in the North Island that had been reacting to weather-related outages throughout the night.
"We are often at the vagaries of Mother Nature, so it is timely for customers to make sure their household emergency kits allow for power outages."
"As part of your household emergency kit, make sure you have a battery operated radio and torch, a full gas bottle for cooking on your BBQ, and if you rely on electricity for heating, we also recommend a portable gas heater," he said.
