He said from there he just pushed hard and held on to win.
"That's just what happens in an ultra, you have to choose your timing and when to go, and do it right," he said.
Backhausen also won the 100km race at the Great Ocean Walk 100 in Australia last month.
Well-known Bay of Plenty runner Morrissey finished about nine minutes behind the Australian to claim silver.
Morrissey won the 42km distance at the inaugural Tarawera Trail Marathon and 50km event last year and decided to step up to the 50km event this year. Auckland's Sam Corbett rounded out the podium a further two minutes back.

Wellington runner Fiona Hayvice had some added motivation to get to the finish line at the Tarawera Trail Marathon and 50km event, on her way to winning the race.
"I often think of the cold beer at the finish line, it gives me an extra kick," she said with a laugh.
Hayvice won the 50km women's race in a time of 4h 46m 3s yesterday after holding off fellow Wellington runner Jo Johansen.
"We actually ran most of the race together and chatted away which was great," she said.
"We are both from Wellington and have run together quite a bit this year, so know each other quite well.
"It was not until after the Buried Village [the 35km mark] that I kept going at the pace I felt comfortable at, and I think that was potentially the place where I sort of lost her a little bit."
Hayvice said it was her first win in an ultramarathon distance and she was looking forward to taking part in her fourth Tarawera Ultramarathon in February.
In the marathon distance, Raglan's Tom Wellby won the men's race while Christchurch's Andrea Davies took home the women's title.
