American runner Dylan Bowman is leading the 100km Tarawera Ultramarathon at the 55km mark of the race.
The 100km race started at 6am this morning in Rotorua and will finish in Kawerau this afternoon.
Bowman was the first 100km runner past the 55km mark, near the top of Lake Tarawera, which he passed about 10.20am.
He was followed by Yun YanQaio from China in second, who was nine minutes behind the leader, with Robbie Britton from London close behind in third.
Meanwhile, the leading woman was Kiwi Ruby Muir at the 37km mark, just after 9am, followed by Shona Stephenson (Aus), Ruth Croft (NZ), and favourite Nuria Picas-Albets (Spain).
