Truck left on edge of cliff

A Mainfreight truck has been left on the edge of a 15m cliff in the Waioeka Gorge.

The nine-axle truck had rolled and turned over onto its side on State Highway 2 in the gorge, near Opotiki, fire northern communications shift manager Megan Ruru said.

It was being held back from the edge of the cliff by a guard rail, she said.

The driver was out of the vehicle when fire services arrived just before 2pm. The vehicle was full of Chep pallets and vegetables, Ms Ruru said.

A spokeman for St John said they attended the scene, but were stood down by police as the driver only had minor injuries to his arm.

Police northern communications shift commander Inspector Tony Wakelin said there was no danger of the truck falling over the edge of the cliff and the driver had been taken to Gisborne Hospital by car. Cranes would be required to move the vehicle from the scene later, he said.
