Rotorua has scored highly on an influential travel website which rates the city as the second-best destination in the country behind Queenstown.
Tourism officials are encouraged by the news after Rotorua jumped two places from fourth last year. TripAdvisor is the world's largest travel website and this week it announced its annual Travellers' Choice awards for destinations around the globe.
The awards honour the top travel spots worldwide based on millions of reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travellers gathered over a 12-month period.
Rotorua was rated second behind Queenstown for the best place to visit in New Zealand and was rated fifth-best destination in the South Pacific.
Taupo also rated highly as third in New Zealand and seventh best in the South Pacific, while Tauranga was rated seventh in New Zealand and 15th in the South Pacific.
